White Spots on Dates: Sugar Crystals or Mould?

White sugar spots on dates

Seeing white on your dates can be alarming, but in most cases it is completely harmless. Here is how to tell the difference.

Usually: natural sugar

The most common cause is natural sugar rising to the surface and crystallising, especially after time in the fridge or a cool room. These white streaks or a fine dusting are simply the fruit’s own sugars, and they are safe to eat. They often soften again at room temperature.

When to be careful

Sugar crystals are dry, whitish and even. Mould, by contrast, tends to be fuzzy, greenish, grey or black, and may come with a sour or off smell or a slimy feel. If a date looks or smells wrong, do not eat it.

Keep them at their best

Store dates sealed in a cool, dry place or the fridge to keep them fresh, see our guide on how to store dates.
