Why Some Dates Are Glazed or Sugar-Coated, and Ours Are Not

Glazed versus natural dates

If you have noticed dates with a glossy, syrupy coating or an extra-sugary surface, you are not imagining it. Some dates are treated to change how they look or taste, and it is worth knowing why.

Why it is done

A coating can make lower-grade fruit look shinier and more uniform, or add sweetness to dates that lack it. It can also mask dryness. In other words, it is often about appearance rather than quality.

What we do instead

Our dates are simply whole, naturally ripened fruit, 100% dates with no added sugar, syrups or glaze. When the fruit ripens fully on the palm, it does not need help to taste good.

How to tell

Check the ingredient list and the surface: a natural sheen is fine, a thick syrupy layer is a sign of coating. See how to recognise quality dates.
