How to Recognise High-Quality Dates

Not all dates are equal. A few simple checks help you tell premium fruit from the ordinary, whether you are buying for yourself or for your business.

Look and feel

Good dates look plump and glossy rather than shrivelled, and feel soft and moist without being sticky-wet. A natural sheen is a good sign; a heavy, syrupy coating is not, see why some dates are glazed.

Read the ingredients

A quality date needs only one ingredient: the date. Look for “100% dates” with no added sugar, syrups or preservatives.

Check the origin

Reputable sellers state the variety and where the fruit comes from. Vague origin claims are a warning sign; clear declaration is a mark of confidence.

Those white specks

White marks are usually harmless natural sugar, not a fault, more in white spots on dates.
